Sustainability Leads the Way of Future Telecom at the Mobile World Congress 2023

The Global Trends 2023 report reveals that a staggering 80% of telecom companies consider energy efficiency to be an essential aspect of their planned upgrades. As we return from the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2023, we are happy to report that digital sustainability was a prominent focus in the innovation agendas of the European telecom industry and policy makers.
At MWC 2023, the top players of the connectivity industry gathered to showcase their latest technologies and discuss the future of telecom. Digital for Planet was there to witness it all, and we are excited to share our key takeaways.

The Trends Toward Greener Future Telecommunications

The telecommunications industry is undergoing a transformation towards sustainability, as evidenced by this year’s edition of MWC that drew over 100,000 participants from around the world. While 5G was a major theme, there was less emphasis on 6G than expected, and satellite communication and the Metaverse were prominent. Robots, AI, and wireless sensing were also highlighted as key features of the future of telecommunications.
One of the most important takeaways from the conference was the role that green ICT can play in protecting the environment. During the keynote speech, top executives from major telco companies such as Telefonica and Orange emphasised the key role of the connectivity industry in shaping a more inclusive, resilient, and sustainable future. They acknowledged, however, that achieving sustainability requires consistent investments and the full engagement of all stakeholders in the telco value chain.
The European Commission delegation, headed by the Commissioner Thierry Breton, also reiterated Europe’s strong commitment to leading the connectivity revolution in an environmentally friendly manner. They highlighted the opportunities available to all telco operators to contribute to building a sustainable future. As the industry continues to evolve, it is clear that sustainability and green ICT will remain crucial considerations for all stakeholders.

At Work to Make It Happen

For Digital for Planet , the MWC 2023 was also an important opportunity to connect to our research and innovation partners active in the European Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU) context. Within the framework of the 6G-NTN project, Digital for Planet is at work on next generation intelligent connectivity to increase its resilience and empower citizens.
Overall, this was an important event for Digital for Planet confirming our strategy, work and commitment to an open, trustworthy and sustainable digital transformation of our society and economy is key to build a better future for all.
