SPIRIT kicks off, Digital for Planet’s first EU research and innovation project to reduce Europe’s CO2 emissions with digital technologies.
October 20, 2022, marked the start of SPIRIT, the European Commission’s funded research and innovation project, winner of the Horizon Europe call HORIZON-CL4-2021-HUMAN-01-25. It gathers eight partners from five different European countries with a common objective: to put real-time immersive telepresence into practice. The final goal is to increase Europe’s innovation capacity to achieve Europe’s climate-neutral targets.

The last few years have demonstrated how video conferencing tools improve interactions while working remotely, greatly impacting CO2 emission reduction thanks to the decrease of travel. However, staring at the tiny rectangle during a long online meeting can eventually become tiring and cause us to lose authentic human connection. SPIRIT intends to take virtual interactions to the next level by creating a vivid 3D meeting experience using advanced eXtended collaborative telepresence technology.
Digital for Planet completes a consortium that gathers top industry, SMEs as well as leading universities and research centres in the field of multimedia communication and VR/AR/XR technologies, such as Ericsson, Deutsche Telekom, Fraunhofer Institute for Telecommunications and the Universities of Surrey, to name a few.

The Digital for Planet team will support the fine-tuning of SPIRIT results by managing a series of Open calls for stakeholders and professionals in multiple vertical sectors. In addition, Digital for Planet will support the overall impact creation and outreach activities by planning and implementing targeted communication and dissemination activities to maximise the visibility of the project.
