Horizon Europe Open Calls for Environment and Climate Action - part II

The Horizon Europe Open Calls in Cluster 5 will provide further funding opportunities for research and innovation projects contributing to climate action.

Horizon Europe is the EC’s key funding programme for research and innovation with an impressive budget of €95.5 billion. Launched in 2021, Horizon Europe will run until 2027, with 35% of its total budget dedicated to supporting projects that tackle climate change and advance the European Green Deal initiative.

The structure of Horizon Europe lists a total of six clusters broken down into individual expected impacts around overarching themes. The six clusters include:

  1. Health
  2. Culture, Creativity and Inclusive Society
  3. Civil Security for Society
  4. Digital, Industry and Space
  5. Climate, Energy and Mobility
  6. Food, Bioeconomy, Natural Resources, Agriculture & Environment

In today’s article, we will focus on Cluster 5, which is driven by the ambition to achieve climate neutrality of the energy and mobility sectors by 2050 at the latest, while boosting their growth, competitiveness, and utility for individual citizens and the society as a whole. Actions within Cluster 5 will support the implementation of the Paris Agreement, the European Green Deal, the European Economic Recovery Plan, and other EU priorities related to climate, energy, and mobility.

EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES AS ENABLERS OF CLIMATE TRANSITION

Notably, Cluster 5 focuses on emerging technologies that can enable climate transition and encourage a bottom-up approach to achieving climate neutrality. The aim is to fund initiatives that deploy trusted digital technologies for a strong and productive European industry that respects and safeguards our planet. This encompasses the transition to complete carbon neutrality of the energy and mobility sectors while strengthening their resilience, efficiency, and utility for the larger society. As such, the EC designed Calls in Cluster 5 to promote profound changes that will allow the European energy and mobility sectors to reach climate neutrality by 2050 at the latest. In the upcoming months, several Cluster 5 Calls will open, providing unique opportunities for funding new, exciting initiatives in the areas of climate, energy, and mobility.
